Tow Rope
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Secure one end of the rope to a recommended vehicle towing point on the rear of the leading vehicle.
Secure the other end to a recommended towing point on the front of the vehicle being towed.
If in doubt, refer to the vehicle manufacturer’s handbook or Haynes workshop manual for towing eyes
or recommended towing points.
2. Display ‘ON-TOW’ warning sign in the rear window of towed vehicle.
3. Ensure vehicle is in neutral gear with the ignition on, so that brake lights, indicators and horn are working
and steering-lock is disengaged. In darkness, ensure side lights are on.
4. To commence towing, move slowly forward until rope becomes taut.
5. Continue to accelerate smoothly avoiding any sudden increased acceleration or heavy braking.
Drive slowly at all times and give clear signals in good time.
NOTE:
Remember the extra weight and length of the combined vehicles and tow rope. Allow more time at
crossroads, corners and on inclines. Vehicles fitted with servo assisted brakes may require greater effort to
apply the foot brake if the engine is not running.
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION AND POWER ASSISTED STEERING:
Some manufacturers recommend that automatic vehicles are not towed above a certain speed
(eg. 20 m.p.h.), or over long distances (eg. 20 miles), always consult the manufacturer’s handbook or Haynes
workshop manual for details. If the engine is not running during towing, greater effort than normal will be
needed to steer the vehicle if it has power assisted steering.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF YOUR TOW ROPE:
Before use, always check your tow rope for damage, ie. cuts or fraying, etc. If any damage is noted, do not
use. Replace the tow rope immediately. Avoid permanent contact with oil or water. Store in the packaging
provided, in a dark, dry environment.
