CAUTION – HIGH VOLUME LEVELS WITH AUDIO PRODUCTS!
This equipment is intended for professional use. Therefore, commercial use of this equipment is subject to the
respectively applicable national accident prevention rules and regulations. As a manufacturer, Adam Hall is ob-
ligated to notify you formally about the existence of potential health risks. Hearing damage due to high volume
and prolonged exposure: When in use, this product is capable of producing high sound-pressure levels (SPL) that
can lead to irreversible hearing damage in performers, employees, and audience members. For this reason, avoid
prolonged exposure to volumes in excess of 90 dB.

CONCEPT
The PMBL-ACTIVE is designed for the simultaneous connection of two mixing desks / line sources to a single
sound reinforcement system, e.g. disco mixer and live desk to the venue system. The active circuitry provides
lossless mixing and signal amplification. The balanced inputs are optimized for line level signals, and the two
stereo channels can be mixed to the stereo output in any ratio. Featuring combo sockets for XLR and 6.3mm
TS connectors channel 1 is designed for consumer level equipment. Input sensitivity is switchable from -10dbV
(consumer level) to +6dBu (studio level). The channel 1 inputs are transformer balanced to prevent ground loops.
The XLR inputs of channel 2 are electronically balanced with a nominal sensitivity of +6dBu. Both channels
feature MONO and MUTE switches, engaging the mute switch changes the channel LED color from green to red.
Rotary controls set the overall levels with a maximum input signal boost of 16dB (approx. 6:1) while unity gain is
at the 12 o’clock (center) position. Individual GROUND LIFT switches are provided for each stereo input and the
output. When engaged they disconnect pin 1 of the respective XLRs from ground to eliminate ground loop hum.
The PMBL-ACTIVE is mains powered by an integrated universal power supply.
CONNECTIONS AND SETUP
The standard rules for placement and operating environment apply, i.e. do not use the PMBL-ACTIVE near water
or moisture. Protect all cables from being walked on to prevent pinching and tripping. Although the PHDA02 does
not generate significant amounts of heat it should not be operated close to heat producing equipment. Use the
included IEC power cord for mains connection. Keep the unit switched off while making all connections to prevent
noise (the mains indicator LED next to the power switch does not illuminate). The input and output connectors are
located at the rear of the unit. Input connections to channel 1 can be made using cables with 6.3mm TS, 6.3mm
TRS, and XLR connectors. The stereo inputs are transformer balanced, when using 6.3mm TS connections input
is unbalanced automatically. Channel 2 features female XLR connectors wired to the international standard (pin
1 = shield, pin 2 = hot / in phase, pin 3 = cold / 180º phase reversal). For unbalanced connection to channel 2,
pins 1 and 3 of the XLR connector must be bridged. Use high quality shielded microphone cable for connection to
the PMBL-ACTIVE due to the superior noise rejection of balanced cables. However, shielded instrument cable with
6.3mm TS connectors may be used for connection to channel 1.
USE
After making all connections engage the mains switch. Mains supply to the PMBL-ACTIVE is indicated by the
power LED, and next to it the channels’ status LEDs light up. Green indicates that a channel is active, red
indicates the channel mute switch is engaged. If you are not familiar with the operating levels of the connected
equipment turn the level controls fully counterclockwise before switching on the PMBL-ACTIVE. Now slowly rotate
them clockwise. Unity gain is approximately halfway at the center position and the recommended setting. If the
equipment connected to the PMBL-ACTIVE features adjustable output levels these should be set for sufficient
PMBL-ACTIVE output to the power amplifier/s. Minor variations are irrelevant, however, turning up the gain of
one unit while reducing it at the other usually results in a lack of dynamics and/or inferior signal-to-noise ratio.
As mentioned before, consumer level mixers should be connected to channel 1, and the +6dBu/-10dBV switch
should be engaged for optimum input sensitivity matching. Each channel features a MONO switch providing
a summed stereo signal when engaged. It can also be used to switch a mono input signal to the L/R outputs.
GROUND LIFT
When the GND LIFT switches are disengaged the XLR pins 1 are connected to ground. If your sound system
produces persistent low frequency hum irrespective of the level control settings this might be caused by double
grounding. Push the GND LIFT switches one by one to find the positions with the least interference.
