Vom Nordpol bis Südpol, vom Flachwasser bis in die Tiefsee:
Forschungsschiffe übernehmen vielfältige Forschungsauf -
gaben auf den Meeren und stellen wissenschaftliche Labore
auf dem Meer dar. Ursprünglich war das 42 Meter lange Schiff
ein amerikanisches Minensuchboot, das 1942 vom Stapel lief.
Die US Navy stellte es Großbritannien zur Verfügung, die es
während des zweiten Weltkrieges im Mittelmeer einsetzten.
Nach dem Krieg verblieb das Schiff im Mittelmeer, wurde
zunächst zu einer Fähre umgerüstet, bis es letztendlich im Jahr
1950 von einem Meeresforscher übernommen wurde. Dieser
baute das Schiff für seine Forschungszwecke grundlegend um
und installierte spezifische Forschungsgeräte an Bord. Das
Schiff verfügt über U-Boote mit Wasserstrahlantrieb, ein
zusätzliches Schlauchboot und einen Hughes 300C Helikopter.
Der Helikopter landet auf dem am Heck installierten Lande -
platz.
From the North Pole to the South, from the shallows to the
deeps, exploration vessels undertake a variety of ocean explo-
ration assignments, acting as floating science laboratories.
Originally this 42 m long ship was an American mine-sweeper
that was launched in 1942. The US Navy made her available to
Great Britain who used her in the Mediterranean in World War
II. After the war the ship remained in the Mediterranean and
was converted into a ferry, until she was taken over by an
oceanographer in 1950. This oceanographer fundamentally
redesigned the vessel and installed specific exploration equip-
ment aboard for research purposes. The ship has hydrojet-
propelled submarines, an additional rubber dinghy and a
Hughes 300C helicopter. The helicopter lands on a pad
installed aft.
