Die als Marine-Kampfflugzeug aus dem Prototyp Northrop YF-17 ent-
wickelte F-18 Hornet der Firma McDonnell Douglas (mittlerweile Boeing)
absolvierte 1978 ihren Erstflug. Die zunächst getrennt entwickelten Jagd-
und Angriffsflugzeug versionen
wurden für die U.S. Navy (USN) und das U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) unter
der Bezeichnung F/A-18 zu einem einzigen Typ vereint. Die Varianten A
(einsitzig) und B (zweisitzig) wurden beide 1980 in Dienst gestellt. Ähnliche
Versionen wurden in großen Stückzahlen von den Luftstreitkräften
Australiens und Kanadas geordert. Seither haben viele weitere Länder
Hornets bestellt. Verbesserungen des Radars und der Angriffssysteme
sowie des Antriebs führten zur einsitzigen Version F/A-18C und der
Doppelsitzer-Version D für den Einsatz sowohl bei der USN als auch beim
USMC. Die Variante A-18C ist ein verbessertes Vielzweck-Kampfflugzeug,
wobei diese Version auch als speziell für den Nachtangriff ausgestattete
Maschine erhältlich ist. Die Produktion des Typs dauert an, hergestellt wer-
den die größeren Varianten F/A-18E und F Super Hornet. Zwei General
Electric F404-GE-402-EPE Mantelstromtriebwerkemit Nachbrenner mit
einem maximalen Schub von je 7.983 kg (17.600 lbs) verleihen der F/A-18C
eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von mehr als 1.915 km/h (1.190 mph) auf
großen Höhen.
Die Fliegerstaffel 17 (Fl St 17) ist eine von drei F/A-18 Hornet-Staffeln in der
Schweiz. Sie ist in der Westschweiz auf dem Militärflugplatz Payerne (VD)
stationiert und gehört zum Fliegergeschwader 11 (Fl Geschw 11).Als ehe-
malige Mirage IIIS -Staffel war sie die erste Einheit in der Schweiz, die 1997
auf die grösstenteils im eigenen Land gefertigten F/A-18C/D umschulen
konnte. Sie galt am Anfang in einem gewissen Sinne auch als Standardi -
sierungs-Staffel, bis auch die Fliegerstaffel 11 und 18 ausgebildet waren. Die
Fliegerstaffel 18 führt ihre Aufträge in Friedenszeiten beim Fliegergeschwa -
der 11 (Fl Geschw 11) ab dem Militärflugplatz Payerne durch. Taktisch
gehört die Fl St 18 aber zum Fliegergeschwader 14 (Fl Geschw 14), das zum
Flugplatz Kommando 14 (Flpl Kdo 14) gehört und auf dem Flugplatz Sion
stationiert ist. Mit dem modernen Kampfflugzeug F/A-18C Hornet bilden
die Fliegerstaffeln 17 und 18 heute einen Teil des Rück grates der schwei-
zerischen Luftverteidigung. Es gehört somit zu ihren Aufgaben täglich zu
trainieren, um einen hohen Standard aufrecht zu erhalten und sich den
neusten Gegebenheiten anzupassen.
Im Januar 2010 konnten die Fliegerstaffeln 17 und 18 auf dem Militärflug -
platz Payerne «ihre» beiden F/A-18C Hornet (J-5017 und J-5018) mit den auf
das Leitwerk gemalten Staffelabzeichen übernehmen.
The McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) F-18 Hornet was developed as a
Naval fighter from the Northrop YF-17 prototype and completed its maid-
en flight in 1978. Initially developed separately as combat and attack ver-
sions for the U.S. Navy (USN) and U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) the designs
were consolidated into a single version under the designation F/A-18.
The A (single seat) and B (two seat) versions both entered service in 1980.
Similar versions were ordered in large numbers by the Australian and
Canadian Air Forces. Since then, many other countries have also ordered
the Hornet. Improvements to the radar and tactical combat systems as well
as the engine lead to the single-seat F/A-18C and two-seat D version for
use in both the USN and the USMC. The A-18C variant is an improved
Multi-Purpose Combat Aircraft. This version is also available as a specially
equipped Night Attack Aircraft. Production of this aircraft continues, cur-
rently the larger F/A-18E and F Super Hornet variants are coming off the
production line. Two General Electric F404-GE-402 EPE turbofans with
afterburners producing a maximum thrust of 7983 kg (17,600 lbs) give the
F/A-18C a top speed of more than 1915 km/h (1190 mph) at high altitude.
No 17 Squadron (Fl St 17) is one of three Swiss F/A-18 Hornet Squadrons. It
is stationed in the West of Switzerland on Payerne (VD) military airfield and
is part of Air Wing 11 (Fl Speed 11). In 1997 the former Mirage IIIS Squadron
was the first unit in Switzerland to convert onto the F/A-18C and D mod-
els which were constructed mainly from components made in their own
country. Initially the Squadron was to a certain degree seen as the
“Standardization Squadron”, until No 11 and 18 Squadrons were formed. In
peacetime No 18 Squadron performs its tasks as part of Aviation Wing 11
(Fl Geschw 11) from Payerne Military Airfield. Tactically, No 18 Squadron is
part of Aviation Wing 14 (Fl Geschw 14) that is part of Airfield Command
14 (FLPL Kdo 14) stationed at Sion airfield. Operating the modern F/A-18C
Hornet Combat Aircraft, No 17 and 18 Squadrons now form part of the
backbone of the Swiss Air Defence System. Part of their task is to train daily
in order to maintain a high state of readiness to successfully combat all
eventualities.
In January 2010, both No 17 and 18 Squadrons were able to take delivery
of „their“ two F/A-18C Hornets (J-5017 and J-5018) with the Squadron
insignia painted on the tail at Payerne Military Airfield.
