Die Le Suroît ist ein Forschungsschiff des französischen
Meeresforschungsinstituts Ifremer. Bekanntheit erlang-
te das Schiff, als es 1985 an einer aus zwei Schiffen be-
stehenden Expedition zur Suche des Wracks der Titanic
beteiligt war. Nicht zuletzt dank des damals neuartigen
Sonars (Sonar Acoustique Remorqué, kurz: SAR) konnte
das Wrack im am 1. September 1985 gefunden werden.
Es befi ndet sich auf Position 41° 43 55 N, 49° 56 45 W
in einer Tiefe von 3.803 Metern. Das schleppbare Seiten-
sicht-Sonar konnte zu dieser Zeit Bilder des Meeresbo-
dens von ungekannter Qualität erzeugen.
The “Le Suroît” is a French Marine Research Vessel oper-
ated by the Ifremer Marine Research Institute. The ship
rose to fame in 1985 when it was involved in a two-ship
expedition to search for the wreck of the Titanic. The
wreck was found on 1 September 1985 thanks in part
to the then novel Sonar (Sonar Acoustique Remorque, in
short: SAR). It is located at position 41° 43 ‚55“N, 49° 56‘
45“W at a depth of 3803 metres (12475 ft). The tow-able
side-scan sonar was at this time able to produce images
of the seabed in unprecedented quality.
