Der Spähpanzer 2 Luchs wurde ab 1975 mit insgesamt 408 Exemplaren bei der
Bundeswehr eingeführt und in den Panzeraufklärungsbataillonen eingesetzt. Der
von Thyssen-Henschel gefertigte allradgetriebene Luchs ist gut gepanzert, hat
eine ABC-Schutzanlage und zeichnet sich durch äußerst leise Fahrgeräusche aus.
Die acht großvolumigen Niederdruckreifen weisen Notlaufeigenschaften auf, für
Geschwindigkeiten bis ca. 50 km/h können vier Achsen gelenkt werden. Als Be-
sonderheit ist das Fahrzeug mit einem speziellen Rückwärtsfahrer mit eigenem
Fahrstand versehen. Fahrzeuge, die auf eine verbesserte Munitionszuführung ge-
ändert wurden, bekamen später den Zusatz Luchs A1.
Bis zur ersten Kampfwertsteigerung ab 1985 war der Luchs voll schwimmfähig
und konnte mit den am Fahrzeugheck angebrachten Ruderpropellern sowie dem
umklappbaren Schwallbrett am Bug Wasserhindernisse rasch und eigenständig
überwinden. Die 1985 anlaufende Kampfwertsteigerung zum Luchs A2 umfasste
u.a. den Einbau eines Wärmebild-Ziel- und Beobachtungsgerätes. Der ursprüng-
lich links am Turm angebrachte IR/Weißlicht-Scheinwerfer entfi el. Als Bewaffnung
dienen eine Bordmaschinenkanone Rh 202 Mk 20 mm mit Munitionswechselein-
richtung und ein 7,62 mm FlaMG, die im Turm untergebracht sind. Das Gefechts-
gewicht beträgt 19.380 kg. Als Antrieb dient ein DB 10-Zylinder Vielstoffmotor
mit 389 PS, der eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von bis zu 90 km/h auf der Straße
ermöglicht. Die Besatzung besteht aus Vorwärtsfahrer, Richtschütze, Rückwärts-
fahrer/Tastfunker und Kommandant.
The Spähpanzer 2 Luchs (Lynx), with a total build of 408, was introduced into the
Federal German army in 1975 where it was used in the tank reconnaissance units.
This all-wheel drive Luchs made by Thyssen-Henschel is well armoured, has NBC
protection and is distinguished by its extremely low running noise. The eight large
low-pressure tyres have emergency running properties; for speeds up to about
50 km/h all 8 wheels can be steered. A special feature of the vehicle is that it has
a station for a second rear-facing driver. Vehicles that were modifi ed to give them
an improved ammunition feed later received the extra designation Luchs A1.
Up until the fi rst combat capability upgrade in 1985, the Luchs was totally am-
phibious and could quickly and independently negotiate water obstacles using
rear-mounted propellers and forward trim vane. The combat capability upgrade
that was applied to the Luchs A2 in 1985 included the incorporation of thermal
night vision equipment, making the original infra-red/white light searchlight on
the left of the turret superfl uous. It is armed with an Rh 202 Mk 20 mm ma-
chine cannon with ammunition resupply system and a 7.62 mm AA MG below
the turret. The combat weight is 19,380 kg. It is driven by a DB 10-cylinder 389 hp
multifuel engine, giving it a top speed of 90 km/h on the road. The crew consists
of front-facing driver, gunner, rear-facing driver/radio operator and commander.
