CONTROLHEADINSTALLATION
Youhavetwochoicesformountingyourcontrolhead,,whereGimbalmounting
youuseasurfaceontheboat,suchasthedash,tomountthecontrolheadso
thatitcanbetiltedupordown,or.In-dashmountingIn-dashmounting
requiresaseparatepurchase.ContactHumminbirdCustomerServicefordetails.
GimbalMountingtheControlHead
Ifyouaregimbalmountingthecontrolhead,youcanpre-assembletheunitin
ordertoplanthebestmountinglocation.
Supplies:Inadditiontothehardwaresuppliedwithyourcontrolhead,youwill
needapoweredhanddrillandvariousdrillbits,varioushandtools,includinga
Phillipsheadscrewdriver,asocketwrenchandaflatheadscrewdriver,amarker
orpencil,safetyglassesanddustmask,andmarine-gradesiliconesealant.
1.Placethecontrolheadintothegimbalbracket.Makesurethatthestraight
sideofthegimbalarmisagainstthebacksideofthecontrolhead.
2.Placea1"(25mm)diameterblackwasheronthegimbalknobandthen
threadtheknobandwasherintothehousing.Tightenthegimbalknobto
securethecontrolheadtothemount.Repeatstep2fortheotherside.
Youcannowplacethecontrolheadinvariouslocationstodecidewhichisbest
formounting.Rotatingthemountingbrackettothetopofthecontrolheadwill
allowforoverheadmounting.Thechosenmountingareashouldallowfor
sufficientroomsothecontrolheadcanpivotthroughthefulltiltrangeandallow
foreasyremovalandinstallation.
NOTE:Youcandrillthecablepassholeunderneaththegimbalbracket,allowingyou
tothreadthecablesthroughtheknock-outholesinthemount;however,ifyoucannot
drilltheholedirectlyunderthemountingbracket,thenyouwillneedtodrillthecable
passholebehindthebracketandmounttheholecoverthereinstead.
NOTE:Whendrillingholesinfiberglasshulls,itisbesttostartwithasmallerbitand
useprogressivelylargerdrillbitstoreducethechanceofchippingorflakingtheouter
coating.Fillallholeswithmarinegradesiliconesealant.
NOTE:Youmusthaveundersideaccesstothemountinglocationtopassthecables
throughtothesurface.Also,makesurethatthemountingsurfaceisadequately
supportedtoprotectthecontrolheadfromexcessivewaveshockandvibrationand
providevisibilitywhileinoperation.
3.Gototheinstallationinstructionsapplicabletoyourtransducerand
accessories.Maketherequiredinstallationsandthenrunthecablestoyour
controlheadmountinglocation.Donotcutanycabling(exceptthepower
cable).Ifyourcablesaretooshort,extensionsareavailablefromyourlocal
dealeroronlinefrom.humminbird.com
4.Afterthemountinglocationhasbeendetermined,loosenthegimbalknobs
andremovethecontrolheadfromthegimbalbracket.
NOTE:Alternateholepatternsareavailableonthegimbalmountingbracket,and
maymatchexistingholesontheboat.Youmaychoosetouseoneofthesealternate
holepatterns.
5.Placethegimbalbracketinthechosenpositiononthemountingsurfaceand
markthefourmountingscrewlocationsusingapencilorcenterpunch.

fourmountingholes.Routethecablesthroughthe1"hole.Placethehole
coveroverthemountingsurfacehole,thenuseittomarkthepositionofthe
twomountingscrews.Removetheholecover,drillthetwomountingholes
usinga9/64"bit.Donotinstalltheholecoveratthistime.

markanddrilla1"(25mm)holethatwillallowyoutorunthecablescloseto
thebracket.Passthecablesthroughthe1"(25mm)hole,routingthecables
throughthegrommetandpressingthegrommetintoplace.Placethehole
coveroverthemountingsurfacehole,thenuseittomarkthepositionofthe
twomountingscrews.Removetheholecover,drillthetwomountingholes
usinga9/64"(3.5mm)bit,fillthemwithmarine-gradesilicone,thenreplace
theholecoverandinsertthe#8Phillipscountersinkwoodscrews.
Hand-tightenonly.
8.Placethemountingbracketonthemountingsurfacealignedwiththedrilled
holesandfillthemountingholeswithmarinegradesiliconesealant.Insert
thefour#10Slotted-Hexwoodscrewsintothemountingholes.
Hand-tightenonly.
9.Ifthecablepassthroughholeisbeneaththemountingbracket,youwillneed
toinstalltheholecoverafteryouhaveroutedallcables.Placetheholecover
overthemountingbracketcablepassthroughholeandalignwithholes
drilledinstep7a.Insertthe#8Phillipscountersinkwoodscrews.
Hand-tightenonly.
NOTE:Besurethatthecablespassthroughtheslotsontheholecoverandthatthere
isenoughcableslacktoallowforthecontrolheadtopivotthroughitsfulltiltrange.

10.Proceedto.InstallingtheCableConnectorInsert

1.Insertcableconnectorsintotheproperrecessesonthecablecollectorinsert.
Thecableconnectorsarekeyedtopreventreverseinstallation,sobecareful
nottoforcetheconnectorsintothewrongslots.Ifyoudon’thaveacablefor
everyholeintheinsert,installtheblankplugstoprotectthecontrolhead
fromtheweather.

keyedtopreventreverseinstallation,sobecarefulnottoforcetheconnectors
intothewrongslots.
Oncethecablecollectorandallcablesarepluggedintothebackofthe
controlhead,locktheassemblyintoplacebythreadingtheknurledscrew
intothethreadedinsertonthebackofthehousing.Adjustthecontrolhead
tothedesiredviewingangleandsecurebytighteningthegimbalknobs.
NOTE:Youmaywishtodressthecablingwithnylonwiretiesinordertoholdthe
cablestogetherandcreateacleanerassembly.
ConnectingtheControlHeadPowerCabletotheBoat
A6'(2m)longpowercableisincludedtosupplypowertothecontrolhead.You
mayshortenorlengthenthecableusing18gaugemulti-strandedcopperwire.
CAUTION!Someboatshave24or36Voltelectricsystems,butthecontrolhead
MUSTbeconnectedtoa12VDCpowersupply.
Thecontrolheadpowercablecanbeconnectedtotheelectricalsystemofthe
boatatoneoftwoplaces:afusepanelusuallylocatedneartheconsole,or
directlytothebattery.
CAUTION!Makesurethatthepowercableisdisconnectedfromthecontrolheadat
thebeginningofthisprocedure.
NOTE:Humminbirdisnotresponsibleforover-voltageorover-currentfailures.The
controlheadmusthaveadequateprotectionthroughtheproperselectionand
installationofa3Ampfuse.
NOTE:Inordertominimizethepotentialforinterferencewithothermarine

TRANSOMTRANSDUCER
INSTALLATION
1.
LocatingtheTransducerMountingPosition
Turbulence:Youmustfirstdeterminethebest
locationonthetransomtoinstallthetransducer.Itis
veryimportanttolocatethetransducerinanarea
thatisrelativelyfreeofturbulentwater.Considerthe
followingtofindthebestlocationwiththeleast
amountofturbulence:
Astheboatmovesthroughthewater,
turbulenceisgeneratedbytheweightofthe
boatandthethrustofthepropeller(s)-either
clockwiseorcounter-clockwise.Thisturbulent
waterisnormallyconfinedtoareasimmediately
aftofribs,strakesorrowsofrivetsonthe
bottomoftheboat,andintheimmediateareaof
thepropeller(s).Clockwisepropellerscreate
moreturbulenceontheportside.Onoutboard
orinboard/outboardboats,itisbesttolocate
thetransduceratleast15"tothesideofthe
propeller(s)(Figure3).
Thebestwaytolocateturbulence-freewateristoviewthetransom
whiletheboatismoving.Thismethodisrecommendedifmaximumhigh-
speedoperation(upto65mph)isahighpriority.Ifthisisnotpossible,
selectalocationonthetransomwherethehullforwardofthislocation
issmooth,flat,andfreeofprotrusionsorribs(Figure1).
Onboatswithsteppedhulls,itmaybepossibletomountthetransducer
onthestep.Donotmountthetransduceronthetransombehindastep
toavoidpoppingthetransduceroutofthewaterathigherspeeds.The
transducermustremaininthewaterforthecontrolheadtomaintainthe
sonarsignal(Figure2).
Ifthetransomisbehindthepropeller(s),itmaybeimpossibletofindan
areaclearfromturbulence,andadifferentmountingtechniqueor
transducertypeshouldbeconsidered.
Ifyouplantotraileryourboat,donotmountthetransducertoocloseto
trailerbunksorrollerstoavoidmovingordamagingthetransducer
duringloadingandunloadingoftheboat.
NOTE:Ifyourequireahigh-speedapplication(above65mph)andcannotfinda
transommountlocationthatwillworkforyourboathull,adifferentmounting
techniqueortransducertypeshouldbeconsidered.SeetheFAQ(FrequentlyAsked

SideImaging:TheSideImagingtransducerhassomespecial
requirementsbecauseofitssideviewingcapabilities:
TheSideImagingtransducermustNOThaveanything
obstructingthe‘view’ofthesidelookingbeams.Nothingcan
beinthelineofsightofthesebeams(notahull,motor,orother
transducer,etc[Figure4]).
NOTE:Youmayneedtotiltthemotorupandoutofthewaywhenusing
thesidelookingbeams.
Inorderforthesidebeamstobedisplayedaccurately,the
transducermustbemountedsothatitislookingstraightdown
inthewaterwhentheboatisinthewater.
Findaturbulence-freelocationatleast15"fromthepropeller(s)and
notinlinewithtrailerbunksorrollers(Figure3).

PreparingtheMountingLocation
Inthisprocedure,youwilldeterminethemounting
locationanddrilltwomountingholes,usingthe
transducermountingbracketasaguide.
1.Makesurethattheboatislevelonthetrailer,
bothfromporttostarboardandfrombowto
stern,byplacingyourlevelonthedeckofthe
boat,firstinonedirection,thenintheother.
2.Holdthemountingbracketagainstthetransom
oftheboatinthelocationyouhaveselected
(Figure6).Alignthebrackethorizontally,using
thelevel.Makesurethatthelowercornerofthe
bracketdoesnotprotrudepastthebottomofthe
hull,andthereisatleast1/4"clearancebetween
thebottomofthebracketandthebottomofthe
transomforfiberglassboats,and1/8"clearance
foraluminumboats(Figure7).
NOTE:Ifyouhaveaflat-bottomedaluminumboat,some
additionaladjustmentmaybeneededtoaccommodate
therivetsonthebottomoftheboat(i.e.thegapmay
needtobealittlesmallerthan1/8").Thiswillhelpyouto
avoidexcessiveturbulenceathighspeeds.
NOTE:Ifyourpropellermovesclockwise(inforward,as
you'refacingthesternoftheboatfrombehind),mount
thetransduceronthestarboardside,andalignthe
bottomrightcornerofthemountingbracketwiththe
bottomoftheboat.Ifyourpropellermovescounter-
clockwise(inforward,asyou'refacingthesternofthe
boatfrombehind),mountthetransducerontheportside,
andalignthebottomleftcornerofthemountingbracket
withthebottomoftheboat.
3.Continuetoholdthebracketonthetransomof
theboat,anduseapencilormarkertomark
wheretodrillthetwomountingholes.Markthe
drillholesnearthetopofeachslot,makingsure
thatyourmarkiscenteredintheslot(Figure8).
4.Makesurethatthedrillbitisperpendiculartothe
actualsurfaceofthetransom,NOTparalleltothe
ground,beforeyoudrill.Usinga5/32"bit,drillthe
twoholesonlytoadepthofapproximately1".
NOTE:Onfiberglasshulls,itisbesttouseprogressively
largerdrillbitstoreducethechanceofchippingorflaking
theoutercoating.
3.
AssemblingtheTransducerandInitialMounting
Inthisprocedure,youwillassemblethetransducerusingthehardware
provided,thenmountitandmakeadjustmentstoitspositionwithoutlockingit
inplace.
NOTE:Youwillinitiallyassemblethetransducerandthepivotarmbymatchingthe
tworatchetstoanumberedpositiononthetransducerknuckle.Furtheradjustments
maybenecessary.
1a.refertothechartbelowfortheIfyoualreadyknowyourtransomangle,
initialpositiontousetosettheratchets(Figure9).Ifyourtransomisangled
at14degrees(acommontransomangleformanyboats)useposition1for
theratchets.Ineithercase,gotostep2.

measureitusingaplumbline(weightednylon
stringormonofilamentline)exactly12inches
long.Holdthetopoftheplumblineagainstthe
topofthetransomwithyourfinger,andwait
untilthelinehangsstraightdown(Figure10).
Usingaruler,measurethedistancefromthe
bottomoftheplumblinetothebackofthe
transom,thenusethechart(Figure9).
NOTE:Itisimportanttotakeyourmeasurementinthe
locationshowninFigure10,fromexactly12inchesdown
fromthetopofthetransom.
2.Placethetworatchets,oneoneithersideofthe
transducerknuckle,sothatthebeadsoneach
ratchetlineupwiththedesiredpositionnumber
ontheknuckle(Figure11a).Ifyouaresettingthe
ratchetsatposition1,thebeadsoneachratchet
willlineupwiththeribonthetransducerknuckle
toformonecontinuouslineontheassembly
(Figure11b).

NOTE:Ifthepivotassemblyissnappedclosedoverthe
mountingbracket,useaflatheadscrewdriverorsimilar
tooltogentlyprytheassemblyawayfromthemounting
bracket(Figure14).
5.Alignthemountingbrackettransducerassembly
withthedrilledholesinthetransom.Witha5/16"
socketdriver,mounttheassemblytothetransom
usingthetwo#10-1"longscrewsprovided
(Figure15).Hand-tightenonly!
NOTE:Makesurethatthemountingscrewsaresnug,but
donotfullytightenthemountingscrewsatthistimeto
allowthetransducerassemblytoslideforadjustment
purposes.
6.Snapthepivotarmdownintoplace.
7.Adjusttheinitialangleofthetransducerfrombacktofrontbyrotatingthe
transduceruntilthesideseamonthetransducerisalmostparallelwiththe
bottomoftheboat,oneclickatatimeineitherdirection(Figure16).
8.Adjustthetransducerassemblyvertically,until
theseamontheleadingedgeofthetransducer
(theedgeclosesttothetransomoftheboat)is
levelandjustslightlybelowthehull(Figure17).
NOTE:Thetransducerhasanaturaldownwardslantof4
to5degreesfromleadingedge(closesttotheboat
transom)totrailingedge(farthestawayfromtheboat).
Lookingatthebackofthetransducer,theseamshouldbe
slightlybelowthebottomofthehull.
9.Continuetoadjustthetransducerassemblyuntil
thebracketisalsolevelfromporttostarboard
(horizontallylevelasyoulookatthetransducer
frombehindtheboat).(Figure18)
10.Markthecorrectpositiononthetransomby
tracingthesilhouetteofthetransducermounting
bracketwithapencilormarker.
11.Tightenthepivotbolt,usingthepivotscrewand
nuttolocktheassembly.Handtightenonly!
CAUTION!Donotuseahighspeeddriveronthis
combinationoffasteners.Handtightenonly.
12.Snapopentheassemblyandhand-tightenthe
twomountingscrews,thensnaptheassembly
closed.
4.
RoutingtheCable

pointwherethecontrolheadismounted.Thereareseveralwaystoroutethe
transducercabletotheareawherethecontrolheadisinstalled.Themost
commonprocedureroutesthecablethroughthetransomintotheboat.
NOTE:Yourboatmayhaveapre-existingwiringchannelorconduitthatyoucanuse
forthetransducercable.
1.Unplugtheotherendofthetransducercablefromthecontrolhead.Make
surethatthecableislongenoughtoaccommodatetheplannedrouteby
runningthecableoverthetransom.
CAUTION!Donotcutorshortenthetransducercable,andtrynottodamagethe
cableinsulation.RoutethecableasfaraspossiblefromanyVHFradioantenna
cablesortachometercablestoreducethepossibilityofinterference.Ifthecableis
tooshort,extensioncablesareavailabletoextendthetransducercableuptoatotal
of50'.Forassistance,contactHumminbirdCustomerService.
CAUTION!DoNOTmountthecableswheretheconnectorscouldbesubmergedin
waterorflooded.Ifcablesareinstalledinasplash-pronearea,itmaybehelpfulto
applydielectricgreasetotheinsideoftheconnectorstopreventcorrosion.Dielectric
greasecanbepurchasedseparatelyfromageneralhardwareorautomotivestore.
NOTE:Thetransducercanpivotupto90degreesinthebracket.Allowenoughslack
inthecableforthismovement.Itisbesttoroutethecabletothesideofthe
transducersothetransducerwillnotdamagethecableduringmovement.

ConnectingtheCable

holder.Seefordetails.InstallingtheCableConnectorInsert
NOTE:Thecableconnectorsarelabeled,andtherearecorrespondinglabelsonthe
connectorholderontherearofthecontrolhead.Theslotsarekeyedtoprevent
reversedinstallation,sobecarefulnottoforcetheconnectorintotheholder.
NOTE:IfyouareinstallingtheSpeedSensoraccessory(optional),youmightalso
needtopurchasetheSonar/SpeedY-Cable.SeeInstallingtheCableConnector
Insertfordetails.
6.
TestandFinishtheInstallation
Onceyouhaveinstalledboththecontrolheadandthetransomtransducer,and
haveroutedallthecables,youmustperformafinaltestbeforelockingthe
transducerinplace.Testingshouldbeperformedwiththeboatinthewater.
1.PressPOWERoncetoturnonthecontrolhead.Iftheunitdoesnotpowerup,
makesurethattheconnectorholderisfullyseatedinthereceptacleandthat
powerisavailable.
2.Ifallconnectionsarecorrectandpowerisavailable,theHumminbirdcontrol
headwillenterNormaloperation.
3.Ifthebottomisvisibleon-screenwithadigitaldepthreadout,theunitis
workingproperly.Makesurethattheboatisinwatergreaterthan2'butless
thanthedepthcapabilityoftheunit,andthatthetransducerisfully
submerged,sincethesonarsignalcannotpassthroughair.
NOTE:Thetransducermustbesubmergedinwaterforreliabletransducerdetection.
4.Iftheunitisworkingproperly,graduallyincreasetheboatspeedtotesthigh-
speedperformance.Iftheunitfunctionswellatlowspeeds,butbeginsto
skipormissthebottomathigherspeeds,thetransducerrequiresadjustment.
5.Ifyouhavethecorrectanglesetonthetransducer,yetloseabottomreading
athighspeed,adjusttheheightandtherunningangleinsmallincrements
togiveyoutheidealtransducerpositionforyourboat.First,adjusttheheight
insmallincrements(Figure17).
NOTE:Thedeeperthetransducerisinthewater,themorelikelythataroostertailof
spraywillbegeneratedathighspeeds,somakesurethatthetransducerisashigh
asitcanbeandstillbesubmergedinthewater.
Ifyouarestillnotgettinggoodhighspeedreadings,youmayneedto
disassemblethetransducermountingassemblyandre-positiontheratchets
(Figures11a-11d).
Ifyoudochangethetransducerposition,re-tracethepositionofthe
mountingbracketbeforeproceeding.
NOTE:Itisoftennecessarytomakeseveralincrementaltransduceradjustments
beforeoptimumhighspeed(upto65mph)performanceisachieved.Duetothewide
varietyofboathulls,however,itisnotalwayspossibletoobtainhighspeeddepth
readings.
6.Onceyouhavereachedaconsistentlygoodsonarsignalatthedesired
speeds,youarereadytolockdownthetransducersettings.Forcethepivot
totheUppositiontogainaccesstothemountingscrews,thenre-alignthe
mountingbracketagainstthetransomoftheboattomatchthetraced
silhouette.Checkthebracketpositionwiththelevelagaintomakesureitis
stilllevel,thenmarkthethirdmountingholeusingapencilormarker.
Unscrewandremovethemountingscrewsandthetransducerassemblyand
setaside.
7.Drillthethirdmountinghole,usinga5/32"drillbit.Useamarine-grade
siliconesealanttofillallthreedrilledmountingholes,especiallyiftheholes
penetratedthetransomwall.
NOTE:Onfiberglasshulls,itisbesttouseprogressivelylargerdrillbitstoreducethe
chanceofchippingorflakingtheoutercoating.
8.Re-positionthetransducerassemblyagainstthetransomoftheboat,then
hand-installallthreescrews.Makesurethatthetransducerlocationandthe
pivotanglehavenotchanged,thenfullytightenallthreemountingscrews
(Figure21).Snapthepivotbackdown.IfyouhaveHand-tightenonly!
performedtheprecedingprocedurescorrectly,thetransducershouldbelevel
andattherightheightforoptimaloperation.
7.
LockingDowntheTransducer(Optional)
NOTE:YouhavetheoptiontolockdowntheTwoPieceKickUpbracketifyoudonot
wantthetransducertokickup.Pleasebeaware,however,thatthetransducercan
bedamagedifitislockeddownanditstrikesdebrisinthewater.
1.Tolockdownthetransducer,tracethepositionof
themountingbracket.ForcethepivottotheUp
positiontogainaccesstothemountingscrews,
thenre-alignthemountingbracketagainstthe
transomoftheboattomatchthetraced
silhouette.Checkthebracketpositionwiththe
levelagaintomakesureitisstilllevel,thenmark
thefourthmountingholeusingapencilor
marker(Figure8).Unscrewandremovethe
mountingscrewsandthetransducerassembly
andsetaside.
2.Drillthefourthmountinghole,usinga9/64"drill
bit.Useamarine-gradesiliconesealanttofillall
fourdrilledmountingholes,especiallyifthe
holespenetratethetransomwall.
3.Re-positionthetransducerassemblyagainstthe
transomoftheboat,thenhandinstallthefirst
threescrews(twoontheoutsideedgesandone
inthe3rdmountinghole).Makesurethatthe
transducerlocationandthepivotanglehavenot
changed,thenfullytightenallthreemounting
screws(Figure21).Hand-tightenonly!
4.Snapthepivotbackdown.Installthe#8x1"
woodscrewintothe4thholetolockdownthe
pivotarm(Figure22).Hand-tightenonly!
