Grid
Examine your globe and you will see lines in a grid pattern all over
your globe. The horizontal lines on the globe are called latitude
lines. There are also lines that link the North Pole with the South
Pole. These are called lines. They also determine the longitude
time zones around the globe, in most cases. With the small
transparent disk on the North Pole, you can see that the time is not
the same everywhere on Earth.
The four directions
On Earth, the poles define the directions: is the direction north
toward the north pole, and is the opposite direction. The south
direction of Earth’s rotation is called and the opposite east,
direction is called west. There is no west or east pole! The globe’s
north pole is at the top of the
globe. This is the standard.
However, it is only a convention to
position a globe with the north
pole at the top, just as it has been
agreed to draw maps so that the
top edge is the north. In reality,
there is no absolute “top” or
“bottom” to dictate this orientation. When you are standing on
Earth’s surface, by contrast, these terms take on different
meaning: Bottom refers to the direction toward the Earth’s core
and top refers to the opposite direction, toward the sky.
What is the history of the globe?
The first globe is believed to have existed in ancient times, about
150 years BCE. The supposed locations of the known regions of
the planet were depicted on the globe. Many countries and seas
had not yet been discovered by all of civilization at that time.
Over the course of the centuries, newly discovered land masses
were added and globes became more and more precise. In recent
times, thanks to contemporary measurement technologies and
satellite images, globes have become increasingly more precise.
