Designation of text
passages
The operating steps described
may be designated in different
ways.
Operating step without direct
reference to a figure.
Example:
Sharpen blades evenly to
prevent vibration due to
imbalance.
Operating step with direct
reference to the relevant figure
to be found in the illustration
pages (at the front of the
instruction manual), with a
corresponding reference to the
item number in the figure.
Example:
1= bolt
2= Lever ...
General lists, which do not
refer to the illustrations.
Example:
- use of the product for
sporting or competitive
events
In addition to descriptions
of operating steps, this in-
struction manual includes text
passages containing important
additional information. Such
passages are identified using
the symbols described below
in order to especially empha-
sise them in the instruction
manual:
Danger of accident and
risk of injury to persons
and serious damage to
property.
Information which is not
absolutely necessary for
operation of the appliance,
but which may lead to a
better understanding and
better use.
The illustrations can be found
at the front of the instruction
manual
Lawn mower with blade
brake clutch, BBC
VIKING lawn mowers with the
designations BC are
equipped with a blade brake
clutch, BBC.
As with all modern lawn
mowers, the blade comes to
a stop within in a short time
as soon as the lawn mower
handlebar is released.
However, thanks to the BBC
system, the engine continues
to run. After the blade has
stopped, this function allows
the user to e.g. move the
mower using the drive
wheels, empty the grass
catcher bag or replace it
with the mulching wedge
and continue working without
having to switch the engine
back on again.
In order to prevent injuries or
damage when working with
the lawn mower, ensure
that you are familiar with
operation of the BBC system
prior to initial use of the lawn
mower. Operation of the BBC
system is described in the
instruction manual; refer in
particular to the sections
"Blade brake clutch, (BBC)",
"Stopping blade/ engine MB
455 BC".
Only touch the
blade once the
engine has been
switched off, the
blade has come
to a complete
stop and the
spark plug socket has been
detached.
CAUTION
Never reach into
the working area
of the blade while
the engine is
running.
Risk of injury!

• Before using, always ensure
that the cutting tool, the
fastening bolt and the entire
cutting unit are in good
condition.
• Please observe the local
regulations regarding
permitted operation times for
lawn mowers.
Mowing procedure
• Before starting the engine,
disengage the cutting tool
and drive (if so equipped).
• When starting the engine,
ensure that spark plugs,
mufflers, fuel tank cap and
air filter are in place.
• Do not attempt to start the
engine if the spark plug has
been removed.
• The mower must not be tilted
when starting the engine.
Risk of injury caused by
rotating blade.
• Never use the mower with
damaged safety devices or
safety grids or without
installed safety devices, e.g.
without the grass ejection
flap or the grass catching
unit.
These safety regu-
lations must be
observed when
working with the lawn mower.
Read the whole
instruction manual for
the appliance and the
instruction manual for
the engine before initial ope-
ration and keep in a safe place
for future reference.
Ensure that you are familiar
with the controls and use of
the appliance.
Never allow children or other
persons who are not familiar
with the operating instructions
to use the lawn mower. The
lawn mower must not be used
by children under the age of
16. Never mow in the vicinity
of other persons, particularly
children, or animals.
Be aware that the person
operating the appliance or the
user is responsible for acci-
dents involving third parties
or their property.
The lawn mower should not be
operated after the consump-
tion of alcohol, medications
which impair reactions, or
drugs.
Before initial use, obtain
advice from the vendor or
another expert.
The lawn mower is only in-
tended for mowing lawns; its
use for other purposes is not
permitted.
Due to the physical danger to
the user, the lawn mower must
not be used for cleaning paths
(vacuuming, blowing, clearing
snow) or as a shredder for
chopping tree or hedge
cuttings.
Only give (or lend) the appli-
ance to persons who are
familiar with this model and
how to operate it - always
provide them with the
instruction manuals.
Preparatory measures
Always wear robust shoes
and long trousers
when mowing. Never
mow barefoot or in
sandals.
Carefully inspect the comp-
lete area on which the appli-
ance is to be used and
remove any stones, sticks,
wires, bones and other
foreign objects.

A slope inclination of 25°
corresponds to a vertical
height increase of 46.6 cm
for a 100 cm horizontal
surface.
• Always ensure good stability
on slopes. Avoid mowing on
excessively steep slopes in
order to prevent loss of
control of the appliance.
• Only mow at right-angles to
the slope and never up or
down the slope, in order to
avoid being additionally run
over by the running lawn
mower in the case of loss of
control of the appliance or of
falling.
• Be particularly careful when
changing direction on a slope
in order to prevent loss of
control.
• Be particularly careful when
moving backwards and when
pulling the lawn mower.
Risk of stumbling.
• Be particularly careful when
turning the mower around or
pulling it towards you.
• Switch off the engine if tilting
of the mower is necessary
when transporting over
surfaces other than grass,
and when transporting the
mower to and from mowing
areas.
• Never open the grass
ejection flap or empty the
grass catcher bag when the
engine and the blade is
running. A rotating blade can
cause injury.
Risk of injury. Never put
your hands or feet
on or underneath
rotating parts.
Always observe the safety
distance indicated by the
handlebar.
• Switch off the engine and
detach the spark plug socket:
- Before lifting, carrying or
transporting the appliance.
- Before blockages are re-
moved, including those in
the ejection chute.
- If the blade has hit a
foreign object.
The cutting tool needs to
be checked for possible
damage.
- Before checking, cleaning
or working on the mower.
- If the mower begins to
vibrate excessively. It must
be checked immediately.
- Before leaving the mower
unattended.
- When the appliance is not
in use.
To fill with fuel, switch off the
engine and allow to cool
down for at least two minutes
before removing the tank
cap.
Beware of the cutting tool
running on for
several seconds
before coming to a
standstill.
Local regulations may specify
a minimum age for using the
mower.
In order to prevent fire
hazards, keep the engine,
exhaust and battery case
free from grass, leaves or
escaping oil (or grease).
Maintenance and repairs
Detach the spark plug
socket before
performing any work
on the appliance or
engine.
Only carry out servicing
procedures which are
described in the instruction
manual.

• Keep other persons away
from the danger
area.
• Only mow during the day or
when there is enough light.
• For safety reasons, always
use an undamaged grass
catcher bag.
• The switch mechanisms
installed in the appliance by
the manufacturer must not be
removed or bypassed, e.g. by
fixing a control lever to the
handlebar.
• Avoid mowing wet grass. The
risk of accidents is higher if
the grass is wet (increased
danger of slipping for
operator).
• Only mow at walking speed.
Mowing quickly with the
appliance increases the risk
of injury due to stumbling,
slipping etc.

Description of symbols
Warning: petrol is
poisonous and extremely
inflammable
• Keep petrol away from
sparks, naked
flames, pilot lights,
heat sources, and
other ignition
sources.
• Transport the appliance with
an empty fuel tank or closed
fuel cock (if fitted).
•Re-fill the tank out of doors
and do not smoke during re-
filling.
• Petrol must only be stored in
appropriate containers.
• Re-filling with petrol must be
performed before the engine
is started. When the engine
is running or is hot, the tank
cap must not be removed
and the tank must not be re-
filled with petrol.
• Do not fill fuel tank comple-
tely, but fill to approx. 4 cm
below the edge of the filler
neck so that the fuel has
room to expand.
• If petrol is spilled, the engine
must only be started after the
petrol-contaminated area has
been cleaned. All attempts at
starting must be avoided until
the petrol fumes have
dispersed (wipe dry).
• For safety reasons, fuel line,
petrol tank, tank cap and
connections must be
checked regularly for cracks
and leaks and replaced if
damaged.
• Replace damaged exhaust
silencers and guard plates
on the exhaust.
• Never store the appliance
with petrol in the tank inside
a building. The resulting
petrol fumes could come into
contact with naked flames or
sparks and could be ignited.
• Allow the engine to cool
before storing the appliance
in an enclosed space.
• Do not alter the basic setting
of the engine or run at
excessive engine speeds.
• The engine-powered
appliance generates
poisonous exhaust
gases as soon as
the engine is
running. These gases may be
odourless and invisible.
Never work with the engine-
powered appliance in a
closed or poorly ventilated
room.
Danger to life through
poisoning!
• If it is necessary to drain the
tank, this must be done out
of doors by driving until
empty.
Only use original spare parts.
This applies to cutting tools in
particular. When replacing the
cutting tool, ensure that the
correct type of cutting tool is
installed.
• Ensure that all nuts, pins and
bolts are securely tightened,
so that the appliance is in a
safe operating condition.
• If the cutting tool or the lawn
mower hits an obstacle or a
foreign object, the mower
must be switched off and a
competent inspection must
be performed (if necessary,
contact authorised customer
service).
• Check the grass catching
unit regularly for wear,
damage or for loss of
functionality.
• In the interests of safety,
replace all worn or damaged
parts.
• Do not continue using
damaged or cracked tools
and do not repair - for
example by welding or
straightening - change of
shape (imbalance).
Caution!
Never reach into the working
area of the blade while the
engine is running.
Risk of injury!

Notes on mowing Blade brake clutch (BBC)
NOTE
NOTE
Mulching function
MB 450 M, MB 455 M
To ensure a perfect, thick
lawn, mow regularly and keep
the grass short. Do not cut too
short in hot, dry conditions as
the lawn will dry out or burn in
the sun and become unsightly.
The cutting pattern will be
better with a sharp blade than
with a blunt one. The blade
must therefore be sharpened
regularly (dealer).
Do not mow wet grass or mow
in the rain. The risk of acci-
dents is higher if the grass is
wet (increased danger of
slipping for operator).
For safety reasons, always
use an undamaged grass
catcher bag.
Mulching is performed with
the new multi-blade - i.e. the
grass is cut in steps, chopped
to a fine organic mass in the
housing closed off by the
mulch insert and is ejected
back into the grass to
decompose.
The cuttings must not be
disposed of when mulching,
as the finely chopped grass
decomposes on the lawn,
returns the nutrients in the
cuttings to the plants and also
protects the ground from
drying out.
Time and money is saved for
fertiliser and sprinkling.
Mowing on slopes
In order to ensure an ade-
quate oil supply for the
4-stroke engine, the lawn
mower must not be used on
inclines of more than 25°.
A slope inclination of 25°
corresponds to a vertical
height increase of 46.6 cm for
a 100 cm horizontal surface.
12
13
Mulching procedure
MB 450 M, MB 455 M
Cutting height 4-7 should
be selected for mulching,
as this is the most suitable
range for shredding the
grass.
14
It is important to select the
correct operating speed and
height for mulching to allow
the multi-blade to achieve
optimal grass shredding and
a good cutting pattern.
Mulching should not be
performed when the grass is
too high or wet.
Motorstop lever
MB 400, MB 450/ M,
MB 455 E/ M/ C
To stop the engine,
release
C= motorstop lever; the
engine and the mowing
blade come to a complete
standstill after a short
run-down time.
15
The model MB 455 BC is
equipped with a blade brake
clutch (BBC).
The blade is switched
on when the engine is
running by pressing
C= blade stop lever and then
pulling
A= blade clutch lever in the
direction of the handle-
bar.
When the blade stop
lever is released, the
blade comes to a
standstill in less than
3 seconds and the blade
clutch lever returns to the
initial position.
The engine continues to
run.

Starting the blade:
Risk of injury!
If the function test fails
(continued audible wind
noise despite relasing the
handlebar), shut off the
engine, detach the spark
plug socket and contact an
authorised dealer (VIKING
customer service).
Start the engine
as described in the
instruction manual.
Engage the blade
as described in the
instruction manual.
A running blade generates
a clearly audible wind noise.
The running of the blade can
be checked by means of the
wind noise generated.
Release the handlebar.
The blade brake clutch
disengages the blade from
the engine drive, causing a
braking action. The blade
quickly comes to a standstill.
This procedure causes the
wind noise to cease. No wind
noise is audible when the
blade is stopped.

Adjusting the drive
cable
The cable is correctly
adjusted in new units. The
cable may have to be re-
adjusted due to wear of the
clutch.
For this purpose, an
adjustment screw is provided
on the panel.
Correct adjustment:
Actuate the drive lever while
pulling the lawn mower
backwards.
The driving wheels must lock
after approx. one third of the
lever travel.
24
CAUTION
Risk of injury.
Adjustment is carried out
with the engine stopped.
Combustion engine
Maintenance interval:
See engine instruction
manual
Observe the operating and
maintenance instructions
contained in the accompa-
nying engine instruction
manual. To achieve a long
service life, it is always
particularly important to
maintain a sufficient level of
oil and to change the oil and
air filter regularly.
The cooling ribs must always
be kept clean to ensure that
the engine is adequately
cooled.
Wheels and wheel drive
Maintenance interval:
Once a year
Plastic ball bearings are
maintenance-free. The metal
ball bearings should be
lubricated at least once a
year with resin-free grease
or oil.
Your dealer will be happy to
assist you.
The gearbox is maintenance-
free. (MB 455/ M/ E/ C/ BC)
Mowing blade
maintenance
Maintenance interval:
Every 25 operating hours
If mowing results deteriorate
with time, the mowing blade is
probably blunt.
Risk of injury!
Always wear
gloves.
25

when storing the mower for
long periods:
Carefully clean all external
parts of the engine and
mower, in particular the
cooling ribs.
Thoroughly lubricate /
grease all moving parts.
Empty fuel tank and
carburettor (e.g. by running
empty).
Unscrew spark plug and
pour approx. 3 cm3of
engine oil into the engine
via the spark plug hole.
Turn the engine several
times with the spark plug
removed.
Caution:
Keep the spark plug socket
away from the spark plug
hole due to danger of
ignition. Re-install the spark
plug and store the lawn
mower in a dry, dust-free
room in the normal
position.
Cover the engine well and
store the lawn mower in a
dry, dust-free room in the
normal position.
Perform oil change.
Maintainance of the
blade brake clutch
The blade brake clutch is
subject to natural wear. In
order to fulfil its function,
regular maintenance and
servicing work must be
performed on the BBC by
trained personnel (e.g.
VIKING customer service)
in the following intervals:
Professional use:
every six months
(commercial use of the
mower)
Private use: annually
The starter battery is
maintenance-free and is
charged automatically during
operation.
If discharging should occur
(engine starting problems),
the battery must be recharg-
ed without delay. The charg-
ing time is approx. 48 hours.
Only use the original battery
charger supplied.
The battery manufacturer's
regulations must be observed.
CAUTION
Risk of injury.
Observe the specified
torque of 45-55 Nm when
tightening the blade
fastening screws, as the
secure attachment of the
cutting tool depends on
this.
Installing the mowing
blade
Risk of injury!
Always wear gloves.
MB 450 M, MB 455 M:
Engage the upper blade
(24a) in the lower blade
(24b) as illustrated. For
this purpose, ensure that
the bores in both blades
are aligned.

24= mowing blade with the
curved edges pointing
upwards.
For installation, use a
25= wooden block (approx.
60 x 60 mm) to counter-
hold the mowing blade.
Tighten the
26= blade fastening screw(s)
with
27= retaining washer (not
required on MB 455 BC)
to a torque of 45-55 Nm.
26
Sharpening the
mowing blade
The following points must be
observed when re-sharpening
the mowing blade:
Cool the mowing blade
when sharpening, e.g. with
water. The blade must not
be allowed to display blue
colouring, as this would
reduce its cutting quality.
Sharpen blades evenly to
prevent vibration due to
imbalance.
CAUTION
Check blade for damage
before installing. The blade
must be replaced if
notches or cracks are
detected, or if the blades
are sharpened back by
5 mm (wear limit).

Gressklippere med
knivbremsclutch, BBC
VIKING gressklippere med
betegnelsen BC er utstyrt
med knivbremsclutch, BBC.
Under gressklipping bremses
kniven raskt så snart man har
sluppet styret, slik tilfellet er
for alle moderne gress-
klippere. Med BBC-systemet
slås imidlertid ikke motoren
av samtidig. Denne funks-
jonen gjør det mulig for
brukeren for eksempel å
transportere
gressklipperen ved
hjelp av fremdriften,
mme oppsamleren eller
bytte oppsamleren med
bioklippkilen og omgående
fortsette arbeidet uten først å
måtte starte motoren igjen.
Det er svært viktig å gjøre
seg kjent med BBC-syste-
mets virkemåte før gress-
klipperen brukes første gang,
slik at personskader og
materielle skader unngås.
Betjeningen av BBS-systemet
er beskrevet i bruksanvis-
ningen, se spesielt kapitlene

på klippeenheten, monte-
ringsskruen og delene i
klippeenheten.
Overhold de lokale forskrif-
tene for når på døgnet
gressklippere kan brukes.
Fremgangsmåte ved
gressklipping
• Koble fra skjæreverktøyet og
driften (hvis montert) før du
starter motoren.
• Kontroller at tennplugg,
lyddempere, tanklokk og
luftfilter er satt riktig på før
du starter motoren.
• Ikke start motoren hvis
tennpluggen er tatt ut.
• Ikke tipp gressklipperen når
den startes eller når motoren
slås på. Roterende kniv - fare
for personskade.
• Bruk aldri gressklipperen hvis
beskyttelsesutstyr eller -gitter
er skadet, eller uten at be-
skyttelsesutstyr er montert,
for eksempel utkastdeksel
eller oppsamler.
Under arbeid med
gressklipperen må
forholdsreglene som
skal forhindre ulykker, alltid
overholdes.
Bruksanvisningen
for produktet og
motorhåndboken må
leses i sin helhet før
gressklipperen brukes første
gang, og disse må oppbevares
tilgjengelig for senere bruk.
Gjør deg kjent med innstillin-
gene på og bruken av gress-
klipperen.
La aldri barn eller andre som
ikke vet hvordan den skal
betjenes, bruke gressklippe-
ren. Minstealderen for bruk av
denne gressklipperen er 16 år.
Gressklipperen må aldri bru-
kes når det er andre personer,
spesielt barn, eller dyr i nær-
heten.
Tenk på at det er brukeren av
gressklipperen som er an-
svarlig hvis det oppstår ulykker
som involverer andre personer
eller andres eiendom.
Det er ikke tillatt å bruke
gressklipperen etter inntak
av alkohol eller medikamenter
som fører til nedsatt reaksjons-
evne.
r gressklipperen brukes
rste gang, skal forhandleren
eller annen fagkyndig person
gi brukeren en innføring i
hvordan gressklipperen
fungerer.
Gressklipperen er bare bereg-
net til klipping av gress, og det
er ikke tillatt å bruke den til
andre formål.
På grunn av faren for person-
skader, er det ikke tillatt å
bruke gressklipperen til
rengjøring (oppsuging,
renblåsing, snøfjerning) av
gangveier eller som kvern til å
finkutte tre- eller hekkrester.
Gressklipperen skal bare
lånes ut til personer som er
kjent med bruken av denne
modellen, og bruksanvisnin-
gene skal alltid følge med.
Forberedelser
Bruk alltid kraftige, solide
sko og langbukser
under gressklipping.

25° helning på skråning
tilsvarer en vertikal stigning
på 46,6 cm ved 100 cm
horisontal flate.
• Pass på at du alltid står
stødig i skråninger. Unngå å
klippe i svært bratte skrå-
ninger, ettersom du kan
miste kontrollen over
gressklipperen.
• Klipp på tvers i skråninger,
aldri opp- eller nedover. Hvis
du skulle miste kontrollen
over gressklipperen, kan du
i sistnevnte tilfelle også
risikere å få gressklipperen
over deg.
• Vær spesielt forsiktig ved
endring av arbeidsretning
i skråninger, slik at du ikke
mister kontrollen.
• Vær spesielt forsiktig når du
går bakover og når du drar
gressklipperen.
Det er lett å snuble!
• Vær forsiktig når du snur
gressklipperen eller drar den
mot deg.
• Slå av motoren når gress-
klipperen kjøres på annet
underlag enn gress, og når
den transporteres til og fra
området som skal klippes.
• Du må ikke åpne utkastdek-
selet eller tømme oppsam-
leren når motoren og kniven
er i gang. Den roterende
kniven kan forårsake skader.
Fare for at det oppstår
skader! La aldri hender eller
tter komme i
kontakt med
roterende deler.
Sikkerhetsavstanden mellom
styret og maskinen må alltid
overholdes.
• Slå av motoren og trekk ut
tennpluggkontakten:
- r du skal løfte opp, bære
eller transportere gress-
klipperen.
- r du fjerner blokkeringer
eller tilstoppinger i utkast-
sjakten.
- Når kniven har kommet
borti en gjenstand.
Kontroller at klippeenheten
ikke er skadet.
- r du rengjør eller utfører
reparasjoner på gress-
klipperen.
- Hvis gressklipperen
begynner å vibrere mer
enn vanlig. Se straks over
gressklipperen.
- Når du skal gå fra gress-
klipperen.
- Når gressklipperen ikke er i
bruk.
Slå av motoren når du skal
fylle drivstoff. La motoren
avkjøles i minst to minutter
r du tar av tanklokket.
Vær oppmerksom på at
klippeenheten
roterer også etter at
motoren er slått av.
Den stopper etter
noen sekunder.
Lokale bestemmelser
regulerer nedre aldersgrense
for bruk av maskinen.
For å unngå brannfare, skal
motoren, eksosanlegget og
batterikassen holdes fri for
gress, blader og olje (fett).
Vedlikehold og reparasjoner
Trekk ut tennplugg-
kontakten før det skal
utføres arbeider på
gressklipperen og
motoren.
Utfør bare vedlikeholdsar-
beider som er beskrevet i
bruksanvisningen.
I forbindelse med alt annet
arbeid, må du henvende deg
til VIKING kundetjeneste.

• Hold tredjepersoner borte fra
arbeidsområdet.
• Bruk gressklipperen bare ved
dagslys eller ved god
belysning.
• Oppsamleren skal alltid være
feilfri og uskadet.
• Bryterne som er montert på
gressklipperen av produ-
senten, må ikke fjernes eller
overstyres, ved at for eksem-
pel girspaken bindes fast i
styret.
• Unngå å klippe fuktig gress.
Faren for ulykker øker når
gresset er vått (gjør at
brukeren står mindre stødig).
• Gå langsomt når du bruker
maskinen. Ved høy hastighet
under gressklipping, øker
faren for skade ved at man
snubler, glir osv.
• Av sikkerhetsgrunner får
VIKING gressklippere med
bensinmotor ikke brukes i
skråninger med stigning på
mer enn 25° (46,6 %).
Skråninger får kun klippes på
tvers, aldri oppover eller
nedover, da det kan føre til at
man mister kontrollen over
gressklipperen. Fare for at
det oppstår skader!
