Background:

Feedback Delay Networks (FDNs) are bu around multiple delays which are connected to heir ilt t
inputs thanks to a feedback matrix designed for s stab ty and lossless properties. it ili
FDN can mimic the recursive process o sound waves bouncing back and forth in an acoustic f
space. They were first suggested for artificial reverberation by Michael erzon (1971) and later G
John Stautner and Miller Pucke e (1982) introduced four-channel FDN reverberator with tt
ge
neral stab ty conditions. A lot o very famous brands are using FDN in their reverberation ili f
algorithms.
But FDN can also be used as a special case of digital waveguides, they can be tuned, or also
used as complex delays. The Mariana Trench Z-D cartridge is designed to explore these SP
more unusual sides o he FDN algorithms. f t
How it works:
In the contex of the Z-Dt SP, the FV1 chip (its brain) computes these FDN algorithms. Despite its
limited power, the nice design of the chip allows th a consequently optimised code, running a , wi
four delay ne FDN. li
The following figure provides a schematic overview of the FDN as it is implemented in Mariana
Trench (o course, his structure slightly vary across he 8 programsf t t , and also include some
importan optimisations). t

The full FV1 delay ne is spli 4 parts and necessary low pass f ters ( d sometimes a DC-cut) li t il an
are inserted in each feedback loop. A feedback gain is also available, allo ng to tune the wi
reverberation decay as we as the delay length when used as the delay. ll
The colour of the FDN is strongly a ected by he choice of the feedback matrix as well as the ff t
delay- ne lengths usually selected as idea y mutually primes. li ll
Also the full delay ne is always available, the Z-D controls have been li SP
used to be able to use
these delays from length of a few samples up o their full length. t
The Mariana Trench Z- P FDN algorithms can be used in diDS fferent ways:

● a very interesting way of using Mariana Trench algorithms is to take advantage of the
Feedback capab ty of the Z-D : set he FEEDili SP t BA BACK 1 or FEED CK 2 knob o you f
Z-D o 75% to 100% and tweak he VC-D knobs (you don't even need any input): SP t t SP
you ll ge amazing evolving exture. This usage is especially effective with "wi t t FDN
Modulated" programs (5 and 6)
