Small Signal Shredder!
Plumes is an overdrive based around that classically overdone tube-like circuit you all know, and amps
crave. While this particular circuit has been done to death, we here at EarthQuaker Devices brand of
special effects pedals think the Plumes offers an original take on the old, tired dead horse everyone loves
to beat on. You can’t get enough of it, so we are giving you some more. Doctor’s orders and what not….
For starters, we’ve done away with the sacred 4558 IC and the classic BJT transistor buffers and
replaced them with JFET operational ampliers and raised the input impedance to nearly 10 megaohms!
This offers lower noise, better signal integrity and more chime in the high end. We power this OpAmp
by taking the 9v input and internally converting it to +/- 9v to give it more headroom. The end result is a
more three-dimensional tone with added clarity that really pushes a nice tube amp over the edge. You
might notice how those badass leads you’re always ripping will blast over those awful, no good cymbals
your drummer is constantly bashing around on. It sounds like diamonds…a million f**king diamonds!
We’ve also added three different clipping options for your consideration. Mode 1 is symmetrical clipping
utilizing a pair of light emitting diodes. This is the crunchiest setting the Plumes has to offer. When
played through a clean amp, it’ll deliver a reasonable facsimile of that classic black and gold British
valve amp tone. If you already set your amp dirty, using this mode will make it lthy. Mode 2 is clean
boost mode. This eliminates the soft clipping diodes altogether and leaves you with straight OpAmp
drive. This is perfect for pushing your clean tone out in front or driving the preamp of an already
overdriven amp into tasteful breakup territory. Mode 3 is an asymmetrical silicon diode arrangement
similar to the stock screamer but with more output and clean clarity; the tone some people describe
as “transparent”. It’s almost as if your clean tone is blended in with a slightly less clean tone, p1-ya know?
Using this mode gives a warmer low-end response and lower output. It’s less hard on your amp and
your ears. It’s a classic pleasant tone the whole band can enjoy.
Not enough for you? We’ve also improved the way the classic tone control operates while still leaving
it familiar enough to keep you warm and comfortable. It’s still a safe space, no worries in here. It’s now
useful through the whole range. The low end is big and clear, and the high end is bright and cutting
without killing the mids. Just the right amount of tonal tickling to excite those ear drums yet still give that
familiar mid-heavy drive.

Controls
Gain: This controls the amount of drive.
Tone: More bass to the left, more middles in the middle and more treble to the right.
Level: This controls the output volume.
Clipping Modes (3-Way Toggle):
1: Symmetrical LED clipping - More Crunch and Compression.
2: No clipping - Wide open OpAmp drive for clean boost.
3: Asymmetrical silicon diode clipping - More transparency with a loose feel.
Power
This device takes a standard 9 volt DC power supply with a 2.1mm negative center barrel. We always
recommend pedal-specic, transformer-isolated wall-wart power supplies or multiple isolated-output
supplies. Pedals will make extra noise if there is ripple or unclean power. Switching-type power
supplies, daisy chains and non-pedal specic power supplies do not lter dirty power as well and let
through unwanted noise. DO NOT RUN AT HIGHER VOLTAGES!

Technology
This device features Flexi-Switch Technology! This relay-based, true bypass switching style allows you
to simultaneously use momentary and latching-style switching.
• For standard latching operation, tap the footswitch once to activate the effect and then tap again
to bypass.
• For momentary operation, hold the footswitch down for as long as you’d like to use the effect. Once
you release the switch, the effect will be bypassed.
Since the switching is relay-based, it requires power to pass signal.

“seidenweichen”, “bulligen” Sound mit “röhrengleicher Verzerrung” einschläfern? Wenn das so ist, hast Du Dich
für das richtige Pedal entschieden, Kumpel! Glückwunsch zu Deinem neuen Plumes Small Signal Shredder!
Der Plumes ist ein Overdrive, der auf der klassischen, immer wieder beschworenen, “röhrenartigen” Schaltung
basiert, die wir alle kennen und nach der sich alle Amps sehnen. Auch wenn diese Schaltung bereits endlos oft
zitiert wurde, glauben wir hier bei der EarthQuaker Devices Marke für besondere Effektpedale, dass Plumes eine
originelle Variante des alten, müden oder toten Pferdes ist, auf dem immer noch alle gerne herumreiten. Du kannst
nicht genug davon bekommen – also geben wir Dir noch ein bisschen mehr. Ärztliche Anordnung und so weiter ….
Als Einstieg haben wir auf den geheiligten 4558 IC und auf die klassischen BJT Transistor-Puffer verzichtet und
diese durch JFET Operationsverstärker ersetzt und dabei gleich die Eingangsimpedanz auf fast 10 Megaohm
erhöht! Das rauscht weniger, bietet eine bessere Signalintegrität und einen klareren Hochtonbereich. Für die
Stromversorgung dieses Operationsverstärkers verwenden wir die 9 V Eingangsspannung und wandeln sie für
mehr Headroom intern in +/- 9 V um. Das Endergebnis ist ein Sound, der dreidimensionaler und klarer klingt,
und der Deinen netten kleinen Röhrenverstärker wirklich über seine Grenzen schiebt. Du wirst merken, wie die
abgefahrenen Soli, die Du ständig raushaust, endlich über diese furchtbaren, nutzlosen Becken, auf denen Euer
Drummer dauernd herumprügelt, triumphieren. Ein Klang wie Diamanten … eine Million verdammter Diamanten!
Wir haben Dir außerdem noch drei verschiedene Clipping-Optionen zur Auswahl gegeben. Modus 1 ist
symmetrisches Clipping, bei dem ein LED-Paar verwendet wird. Das ist die chrunchigste Einstellung, die
Plumes zu bieten hat. Wird durch einen cleanen Amp gespielt, liefert diese Einstellung eine ziemlich realistische
Nachbildung des klassischen schwarz-goldenen, britischen Amp-Sounds. Wenn Dein Verstärker bereits auf
Verzerrung eingestellt ist, kannst Du diesen Modus nutzen, um den Sound erst richtig dreckig werden zu lassen.
Modus 2 ist der Clean-Boost Modus. Hierbei werden die Soft-Clipping Dioden komplett weggelassen, und es
bleibt der reine Schub des Operationsverstärkers. Das eignet sich perfekt, um Deinen Clean-Sound nach vorne
zu bringen oder den Preamp eines bereits leicht übersteuerten Amps in geschmackvolles Breakup-Territorium
zu schieben. Modus 3 ist eine asymmetrische Anordnung von Siliziumdioden, ähnlich dem Standard-Screamer,
aber mit mehr Ausgangsleistung und sauberer Klarheit im Ton; der Sound, den manche Menschen als
“transparent” beschreiben. Das klingt beinahe, als würde Dein Clean-Sound mit einem etwas weniger cleanen
Sound gemischt. Dieser Modus liefert ein wärmeres Low-End und etwas weniger Ausgangsleistung. Damit
werden Dein Verstärker und Deine Ohren nicht so hart rangenommen. Ein klassischer, angenehmer Sound, an
dem sich die ganze Band erfreuen kann.
Das reicht Dir noch nicht? Wir haben auch die Arbeitsweise der klassischen Klangregelung verbessert und sie
dabei aber vertraut genug belassen, dass Du Dich warm und geborgen fühlen kannst. Das ist immer noch ein
sicherer Ort – keine Sorge. Die Regelung wirkt jetzt effektiv über das gesamte Klangspektrum. Das Low-End ist
satt und ausgeprägt, das High-End ist klar und durchdringend, ohne dabei die Mitten zu vernichten. Es wurde
gerade genug mehr Sound herausgekitzelt, dass es interessant wird für die Trommelfelle aber dennoch der
vertraute, mittenlastige Overdrive vorherrscht.

Regler
Gain: Steuert die Intensität der Verzerrung.
Tone: Mehr Bass bei Linksdrehung, mehr Mitten in der Mitte und mehr Höhen bei Rechtsdrehung.
Level: Regelt die Ausgangslautstärke.
Clipping-Modi (3-Wege Schalter)
1: Symmetrisches LED Clipping – mehr Crunch und Kompression.
2: Kein Clipping – weit offener OpAmp-Drive für cleanen Boost.
3: Asymmetrisches Clipping mit Siliziumdioden – mehr Transparenz mit einem lockeren Spielgefühl.
Stromversorgung
Dieses Gerät sollte mit einem Standard-9V-Netzteil betrieben werden (2,1mm, center negative). Wir
empfehlen immer für Pedale bestimmte, isolierte Netzteile oder eine Stromversorgung mit mehreren
isolierten Anschlüssen. Pedale produzieren Störgeräusche, wenn sie mit unreinem Strom versorgt werden.
Schaltnetzteile, Daisychains und nicht auf Pedale ausgelegte Netzteile ltern verschmutzten Strom nicht
zufriedenstellend und produzieren ungewollte Störgeräusche. Nicht mit höheren Voltzahlen betreiben!

-Technologie
Dieses Gerät verfügt über die Flexi-Switch-Technologie! Diese auf Relays basierende True-Bypass-
Schaltung ermöglicht sowohl Momentary- als auch Latching-Betrieb.
• Drücken Sie für den Standard-Latching-Betrieb einmal auf den Fußschalter, um den Effekt zu
aktivieren, und dann erneut, wenn Sie wieder in den Bypass schalten wollen.
• Für den Momentary-Betrieb halten Sie den Fußschalter so lange gedrückt, wie Sie den Effekt
verwenden möchten. Lassen Sie den Schalter los, ist das Gerät wieder im Bypass.
Da diese Schaltung Relays-basiert ist, ist eine Stromversorgung notwendig, damit das Signal
durchgelassen wird.

mentre state suonando? Mettere a nanna i vostri amici usando termini quali “trasparente”, “vellutato”, “forzuto”
e “breakup valvoloso”? In caso affermativo, avete acquistato il pedale giusto! Benvenuti nel nuovo, piccolo
“tritatutto” Plumes
®
!
Plumes è un overdrive basato su quel tipico circuito “valvoloso” ed esagerato che tutti conoscono, e che gli
amplicatori bramano. Noi di EarthQuaker Devices riteniamo che Plumes offra una reinterpretazione originale
di questo particolare circuito, strausato e arcinoto – un ronzino vecchio e stanco, che però tutti quanti amiamo
ancora fustigare. Di questo effetto non ne avrai mai abbastanza, per questo siamo qui per offrirtene ancora di
più. Lo dice anche il dottore: male non fa... anzi: assumerne in quantità!
Per cominciare, abbiamo fatto a meno del sacro circuito integrato 4558 e dei classici transistor buffer BJT,
rimpiazzandoli con degli amplicatori operazionali JFET, così da incrementare l’impedenza d’ingresso a quasi
10 megaohm! Ciò consente di ottenere una minore entità di rumore, una migliore integrità del segnale e
maggior scampanellio delle alte frequenze. Questo OpAmp viene alimentato prendendo i 9v dell’ingresso
e convertendoli internamente in +/- 9v, per fornire maggiore margine. Il risultato nale è una timbrica più
tridimensionale caratterizzata da una maggiore chiarezza, capace davvero di spingere un buon amplicatore
valvolare al di là della soglia. Sentirai come quelle sonorità lead aggressive che hai sempre tentato di imitare
sapranno prevalere su quei piatti brutti e cattivi, che il batterista continua costantemente a battere. Un sound
prezioso come un diamante… anzi, un milione di f**tuti diamanti!
Abbiamo anche aggiunto tre diverse opzioni di clipping da sottoporre alla tua attenzione. Mode 1 è un clipping
simmetrico che utilizza una coppia di LED. Questa è l’impostazione con il suono più crunch che Plumes
mette a disposizione. Se utilizzato attraverso un amplicatore con timbrica clean, consente di restituire un
facsimile ragionevolmente fedele del classico sound di un amplicatore British valvolare. Se hai già impostato
il tuo amplicatore per una sonorità dirty, l’uso di questa modalità renderà tutto ancora più sporco. Mode
2 rappresenta la modalità clean boost. Elimina del tutto i diodi soft clipping lasciando direttamente il drive
OpAmp. Questa modalità è perfetta per spingere le tue timbriche clean ponendole in primo piano, oppure
per servire il preamp di un amplicatore già in overdrive e condurti in nuovi territori, popolati da rafnati effetti
prossimi alla soglia del breakup. Mode 3 è una disposizione asimmetrica del diodo al silicio, simile a uno
screamer convenzionale ma con maggiore entità di segnale in uscita e maggiore chiarezza; una timbrica
che alcuni descrivono con il termine “trasparente”. È quasi come se il tuo suono clean venisse introdotto e
miscelato ad un timbro leggermente meno pulito, hai presente? L’uso di questa modalità fornisce una risposta
delle basse frequenze più calda ed un volume in uscita inferiore. Risulta meno forte per il tuo amplicatore e
le tue orecchie. La classica timbrica piacevole che farà felice tutta la band.
Tutto questo non ti è sufciente? Abbiamo anche migliorato il modo in cui si comporta il classico controllo
di tono, preservandone comunque quella familiarità operativa sufciente a farti sentire a tuo agio. Resta
comunque un pedale salvaspazio, non devi preoccuparti di questo. E risulta efcace nell’arco dell’intera
gamma. Le basse frequenze sono presenti e pulite, mentre le alte frequenze risultano brillanti e nette senza
inuire sulle frequenze medie. Basta la giusta quantità di regolazione per eccitare l’udito, ma conservando
quel tipico drive heavy nelle frequenze medie, così familiare.

Alimentazione
Questo dispositivo utilizza un alimentatore DC standard a 9 volt, dotato di connettore barrel da
2.1mm con polo negativo al centro. Raccomandiamo sempre l’uso di alimentatori specici per pedali,
con trasformatore isolato di tipo da parete, oppure alimentatori con uscite multiple isolate. I pedali
generano rumore extra nel caso in cui l’alimentazione presenti un’oscillazione residua o sia poco
pulita. Gli alimentatori di tipo switching, quelli per il collegamento a catena oppure gli alimentatori non
specici per pedali, non ltrano l’alimentazione non pulita e lasciano passare rumori indesiderati. NON
OPERARE MAI CON TENSIONI PIÙ ELEVATE!

“latching”.
• Per un’operatività latching standard, battere una volta sul pulsante a pedale per attivare l’effetto;
battere di nuovo per bypassarlo.
• Per un’operatività di tipo momentaneo, tenere premuto il pulsante no a quando si intende
utilizzare l’effetto. Una volta rilasciato il pulsante, l’effetto sarà bypassato.
Poiché la commutazione è basata su relè, è necessaria l’alimentazione per far sì che il segnale passi.
